The sign you'll usually find above the harbour at John o' Groats says it's 874 miles from, or to, Land's End. And while Dunnet Head ten miles to the west, extends further north, and Duncansby Head, to the east, is probably a mile or two more distant from Land's End, John o' Groats is the place you start or finish if you want to cover the length of Britain playing hopscotch or pushing a pea.

John o'Groats is an attraction that's been created around a single feature - the northern-most point of Britain - but if you delve a little deeper you'll find lots of wildlife, dramatic views, and several really good walks in addition to the over-priced coffees and tourist-trap plastic souvenirs. There are actually two parts to John O'Groats.

The trail divides naturally at Helmsdale, the halfway point, the southern half being mostly low and the northern half being mostly along cliff tops. The other approach is to walk just the coastal section of the trail, known as the John o' Groats Coastal Trail. This runs from Dornoch to John o' Groats and covers approximately 102 mi/163 km.
